Herrlich to retire

Borussia Dortmund striker Heiko Herrlich has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season.

The former German international, who survived a brain tumour to return to Bundesliga action, has reached an agreement with the club to have his contract terminated after spending this season out of first team contention.

Herrlich will stay available to the club as a "stand-by pro" until the end of the season and will then take up a post working with the Dortmund's youth teams.

"Money isn't the most important thing in life and I'm grateful to BVB for offering me a new perspective," the 32-year-old said.

Dortmund general manager Michael Meier also expressed his delight at the news, saying: "Heiko has had an impeccable Bundesliga career. He's the right man to pass on his experience from this time to our youngsters. We are looking forward to working with Heiko in the future."

Herrlich, who joined Dortmund from Monchengladbach in 1995, made 258 Bundesliga appearances netting 75 goals.
