Forest are still looking over their shoulder at relegation while Millwall have one eye on their upcoming FA Cup final with Manchester United, so a draw could have been expected at The City Ground.
After a dull first half, the second 45 minutes exploded into life within a minute of the restart as David Livermore's right-wing free kick floated over everyone, including Forest keeper Paul Gerrard, and nestled in the far corner.
Andy Reid replied for Joe Kinnear's men on 55 minutes with a superb solo effort that saw him cap off a fine run from the middle of the park with a superb 25-yard screamer that flew into the top corner giving Andy Marshall no chance.
A full-blooded encounter then boiled over as referee Brian Curson handed both Forest stopper Wes Morgan and Lions striker Danny Dichio red cards after the two scuffled following an aerial challenge.
With ten a-side, the hosts then took the lead with 20 minutes left to play when David Johnson scored his first goal since his horrific broken leg he sustained back in September.
The former Ipswich man benefited from a strong burst by Reid and a cross from Marlon King before keeping his cool to sell Marshall a dummy and slot home for 2-1.
Dennis Wise's side do not lay down for anyone though, and with just six minutes left to play Nick Chadwick slammed a loose ball home from the edge of the box to hand Millwall a share of the points.
