Barthez - Save was down to luck

Fabien Barthez admits there was plenty of luck involved in his spot-kick save from England captain David Beckham in Lisbon.

The France keeper dismissed suggestions he knew Beckham's preferred penalty practice from their time together at Manchester United.

The shaven-headed shot-stopper also admitted the game would probably have been lost if Beckham had found the net.

"Of course at 2-0 the match would have been completely different," said Barthez. "Even if we scored two goals.

"About the penalty, there is 90 percent of luck and 10 percent of concentration.

"Then you have to give your best on the push (to dive).

"I didn't know where Beckham would kick.

"I did it instinctively.

"I was not afraid of defeat because there are three matches to play and, if you start afraid, it is over.

"We have to trust ourselves. I have already experienced that kind of scenario and it is part of the beauty of football.

"Now the match belongs to football legend, notably thanks to Zizou (Zinedine Zidane).

"Tonight it was Zizou at 100 percent of self-belief."
