Smith signs with Derby

Derby County boss George Burley has signed former Sunderland striker Tommy Smith.

The former Watford hit-man joins The Rams on a three-year contract after playing last season with The Black Cats.

The 24-year-old failed to receive the offer of a new deal with the North East outfit and Derby quickly moved to give him a contract at Pride Park.

Smith becomes the third summer signing at the East Midlands club following the captures of Bosnian international defender Mo Konjic from Coventry City and Danish midfielder Morten Bisgaard from FC Copenhagen.

The striker is looking forward to helping turn around Derby's fortunes next term.

"Every footballer wants to play in the top league and I know Derby have been there and this is a Premiership set-up, so we have to do as well as we can next season and see where it takes us," Smith told the club's official website.

"I know a lot about George Burley from his time at Ipswich and playing against Derby last season, I saw their style of play and think it's a style that will suit me."
