Aston Villa defender Ulises de la Cruz has agreed a new two-year deal at the club.

The right back showed last season how valuable he was, when he filled in admirably for the injured Mark Delaney.

De la Cruz has now agreed a two-year deal which will now run until 2006.

"I'm really enjoying myself here," he told the club's website.

"Sometimes it's difficult when I don't play, but this is a great club. Obviously I would like to play in every match.

"Whether I'm in the team or not depends on the manager and what he thinks is best. All I can do is play as well as possible and hope to be selected.

"I feel more confident after having a run of games. It's important to be playing as much as possible and I feel I improved with every game last season.

"I like it here and I want to play at the top for this club. I believe we can be very successful."

The Ecuador star moved to Villa Park from Hibernian in 2002 after he impressed the then Villa boss Graham Taylor during the World Cup in Japan and Korea.

De la Cruz is the latest Villa star to pen a new deal following the likes of Juan Pablo Angel and Olof Mellberg in pledging their futures to the club.
