Forlan thanks Fergie
Diego Forlan has thanked Sir Alex Ferguson for letting him leave Man Utd.
Diego Forlan has thanked Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for allowing him to leave Old Trafford. The Uruguayan international signed for Spanish side Villarreal over the weekend after a disappointing spell with The Red Devils.
United sanctioned a significant loss on their £7.5 million outlay for Forlan by accepting Villarreal's offer for the misfiring front man.
He admits Ferguson advised him to move to Villarreal and is grateful he was allowed to leave the club, despite Alan Smith being the only fit striker available to the manager.
"I must say that I am very thankful to Manchester United because they let me go without any problems at a moment when there are many injured players," said Forlan.
"But I also knew that when they recovered I wasn't going to have many chances to play."
Forlan will don the number five shirt for Villarreal but acknowledges he will have another battle on his hands to claim a regular starting role.
He added: "Now I know that I have arrived at a team in which I will have to fight for a place.
"I know many of my new team-mates and, most of all, I know that the strikers are very good players so I am going to have to do my best to have a place in the team.
"I know Villarreal very well because in Argentina, Uruguay and England, I saw Spanish football many times.
"I know that I am going to play with the number five on my back but I don't have any problem with those kind of things."
