Mavubu takes French citizenship

Bordeaux's Rio Mavuba has been granted his wish of French citizenship.

Promising Bordeaux starlet Rio Mavuba has finally been granted his wish of French citizenship.

The Congo-born midfielder was offered international honours by the African nation but spurned their advances in favour of French citizenship.

Congo coach Claude Le Roy had wanted the player for a series of World Cup qualifiers but Mavuba chose instead to play a friendly for France against Bosnia in August.

The player has spoken of his delight at being granted permission to play for his adopted homeland.

''It is a symbolic day for me,'' declared Mavuba.

''It is a great honour. I don't forget my roots, my father remains my model, but I grew here in France.

''I am a Frenchman.''
