Nery told to wait

Werder Bremen have told Gustavo Nery he will have to wait for his first-team return.

Werder Bremen have told defender Gustavo Nery he will have to wait for his first-team comeback despite returning to fitness.

The Brazilian international star has impressed coach Thomas Schaaf with his efforts in training since returning from his native country after an operation on his hand, but the club are still not prepared to risk letting him play in the Bundesliga.

Werder sport manager Klaus Allofs explained that he has been in regular contact with Nery's surgeon who has not given the player the all-clear to resume his career.

"The doctor has given us a clear recommendation - and this is for him to take a break until the end of the year," Allofs said.

"In the winter break the wires in Gustavo's damaged hand will be removed and only then will he be allowed to play again," he added.

Meanwhile the German champions look likely to welcome back injured duo Frank Fahrenhorst and Pekka Lagerblom for Saturday's Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen. Both will be given a final workout in training on Friday before a final decision is made.
