Cole calls for Aragones axe

England defender Ashley Cole believes Luis Aragones should face the sack.

Arsenal and England defender Ashley Cole has launched an outspoken attack on Spain coach Luis Aragones following Wednesday's disgraceful scenes in Madrid.

England's black players were subjected to continuous racial abuse in the Spanish capital and Cole believes Aragones was largely responsible for stoking up the atmosphere in El Santiago Bernabeu.

Aragones has previously been involved in a race row with Cole's Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry and the talented left back has now spoken of his disdain for the Spanish taskmaster.

''The way he looked at me - he had so much anger in his face,'' Cole told the News of The World.

''He didn't say anything, but the look on his face was evil.

''To me, it was Aragones who started everything that happened.

''So, it's surely no surprise the Spanish fans behaved as they did. And still their manager hasn't condemned it - it's as if he agrees with it.''

The 23-year-old believes the Spanish FA must act against Aragones or risk being tainted with racism through their association with their coach.

''Something about it got to me this time,'' continued Cole. ''Especially the comments of their manager.

''I was really annoyed that he said so many things and got away with it.

''People letting him off after what he said was just shocking - if he was in any other job, he would have been sacked on the spot.''

Cole's Arsenal team-mate Patrick Vieira was also unimpressed by Aragones's comments regarding England's colonial past.

The Senegal-born France international believed it was hypocritical of Aragones to turn try and turn the tables on the comments he initially made about Thierry Henry to Jose Antonio Reyes last month.

"He is taking Spanish footballers for idiots. He is taking all players for idiots. It does not stand up. It is pure hypocrisy," Vieira told French daily Le Monde.

"Monkey chants and insults are hurtful - because we are all sensitive, we all have a heart and we all feel these things.

"I have experienced the same thing (as the England players) with Arsenal against Deportivo La Coruna and Valencia.

"The lack of reaction after what Aragones said shows how uncontroversial racist attitudes have become in Spain.

"I am also disappointed neither Fifa nor Uefa made any remark to criticise him. He (Aragones) is the Spain coach after all.

"If we players are meant to set an example, then the coaches have a particular responsibility.

"They should not be allowed to make such remarks - especially when they are broadcast to young people."
