Di Michele has Azzurri dream

David Di Michele is hoping for a call-up to Marcello Lippi's Italy squad.

The 29-year-old has been a key player for Udinese so far this season as they have retained an impressive fifth position.

The hit-man has grabbed six Serie A goals so far this term, and believes he merits a cap based on his performances over the course of recent seasons.

Di Michele was also encouraged that Lippi has called on relatively inexperienced players during his time as Azzurri boss.

"I expect a coach's call and I think I deserve it for what I have done in the last three years, but also because the national team has been joined by players with only six months Serie A experience," Di Michele told the GRT press agency.

"I aim to make at least one appearance, maybe on March 30."

However Italy have an abundance of experienced forwards, as well as fringe players determined to make an impact such as Parma hotshot Alberto Gilardino and Udinese team mate Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Di Michele is also keen to take his career onto another level by joining a big club, although admitted he was unconcerned about his final destination.

"As time passes, I understood to be ready to make the decisive step forward. My future will be decided by Udinese, I have no preferences," Di Michele continued.

Udinese face a vital match for their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes on Sunday against Fiorentina, although Luciano Spalletti's side are currently struggling with injuries.

Viola are embroiled in the fight for salvation and represent a tough match, particularly with the absence of David Pizarro, Marek Jankulovski and Valerio Bertotto.
