Terry named Player of the Year
Chelsea captain John Terry has been named PFA Player of the Year.
Chelsea captain John Terry has won The Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award. The Blues skipper has been in outstanding form over the past 18 months for both club and country and was voted top performer by his fellow professionals at the awards dinner in London on Sunday.
Terry pipped team-mate Frank Lampard to the gong - who has also produced some stellar displays over the past season.
"It is unbelievable, and the ultimate accolade to be voted for by your fellow professionals whom you play against week-in and week-out," beamed Terry.
"You just go out there and try to give it your best, and for them to show their appreciation and vote for me is fantastic.
"For Petr, Lamps and myself to be voted in, it was important that one of us won it.
"It has been a real special season with Chelsea and this just adds to it.
"I want to thank all of my team-mates, because without them this would not have happened.
"It is my first year as captain and they have helped me a lot, on and off the pitch."
The other candidates for the award were Petr Cech, Andy Johnson, Steven Gerrard and the man giving up the honour Thierry Henry.
The PFA award is almost certain to be the second piece of silverware Terry picks up this week, as he is likely to collect the Premiership trophy next Saturday.
Terry also has the honour of becoming the first Chelsea player to win the PFA honour. The last Blues player to pick up a major award was Gianfranco Zola when he collected the Footballer of the Year title in 1997.
Terry and Lampard are expected to do battle for the Footballer of the Year award next month.
