Rovers enter Heff race
Doncaster have had a bid for Bristol City striker Paul Heffernan accepted.
Doncaster Rovers have entered the race to land Paul Heffernan after agreeing a fee with Bristol City. The 23-year-old striker had looked to be heading for Oldham after the North West outfit had also agreed a deal with their League One counterparts.
Heffernan has been made available for transfer after City completed the high profile capture of Sunderland hit-man Marcus Stewart.
A fee in the region of £125,000 is thought to have been enough to tempt Robins boss Brian Tinnion into a sale - with the player now left with a straight choice between the two clubs.
"We have accepted offers from both clubs for the player, this is not unusual," said City chief executive Colin Sexstone.
"It is now up to Paul to talk to the clubs concerned and agree personal terms with one of them."
Whilst Oldham had been confident of securing Heffernan's services, it would appear Doncaster too are of the opinion that he will be lining up at Belle Vue next season.
"The deal is still in its early stages and we were hoping that it wouldn't get out into the press," said a Doncaster spokesman.
"Paul Heffernan has spoken to Oldham and at the moment he is in talks with Dave Penney about a possible deal.
"As soon as anything is finalised the club will release a statement."
Meanwhile, Oldham chief executive Alan Hardy has confirmed he was surprised to learn that Heffernan had agreed to talk to Doncaster.
"We were under the impression we had agreed terms with the player's agent last week,'' concluded Hardy.
"We reached agreement last week with Bristol City and the player's agent and were just waiting for the player's return from holiday for him to sign the agreement.
''Now we'll have to wait and see."
