Frings slams Magath
Torsten Frings has revealed the reason behind his move from Bayern Munich.
German international midfielder Torsten Frings revealed that his poor relationship with Felix Magath is the reason why he left Bayern Munich after only one season at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern paid Dortmund ‚é¼9.3 million for Frings in 2004, but allowed the 28-year-old to link up with former club Werder Bremen in a swap deal which sees defender Valerien Ismael making the move the other way.
Frings, who was a first team regular when Bayern won the German Double this season, said it wasn't a lack of first team opportunities that made him leave as he featured heavily in the team, and was pleased with winning the trophies, but said he and Magath simply did not see eye-to-eye.
"We were successful, but didn't have the best relationship," he commented.
"Magath did give me some backing, but not 100 percent and that's what I was missing and which had an effect on my performances.
"I want to play in my favourite position like I do in the national team and that's in the centre of midfield, as a holding player directly ahead of the defence, but Magath didn't see me there and that's why I left.
"I am very happy that I won two titles with Bayern, but I realised that winning titles isn't everything. My mentality simply didn't match with Magath's."
Frings explained that these were the only reasons for his surprising decision to leave the Munich giants and continue his career with Werder.
He has committed his future to the Weserstadion until 2009 and is sure that he will have no problems to settle at the club where he starred between 1997 and 2002.
"I am delighted about the move and I am convinced that I'll fit in fine as I know the players, the surroundings and the coach," added Frings, who will line up with his new team after representing Germany at the Confederations Cup this month.
