Barcelona midfielder Xavi has undergone surgery on the knee ligaments he tore last week and is reported to be in good spirits despite the injury.The Spanish international midfielder damaged the ligaments in his right knee during a training session on Friday and looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
Indeed, his participation in next summer's World Cup finals appears in major doubt as he is expected to be out of action for at least six months.
The 25-year-old was operated on by Barca's medical staff on Saturday and, having declared the surgery a complete success, they insisted the player was remaining upbeat despite his predicament.
"Mentally he is at one thousand percent and that will be very important in his recuperation," stated head of Barca's medical services Jordi Ardevol.
However, when questioned whether he had a chance of making the World Cup, another doctor, Ramon Cugat was less positive, adding: "Only the Gods know. We can't be fortune-tellers.
"You are asking too early as he has only just come round from the anesthetic.
"It will be him who decides, he who has the last word, but it's too early to say right now."
Barca have suffered a spate of similar injuries in the recent past with Thiago Motta, Gabri, Edmilson and Henrik Larsson all having been laid low with ligament complaints last term.
