Defender Erik Edman admits he has no regrets over his transfer from Tottenham to Rennes, even if Spurs boss Martin Jol was reluctant to lose the left back.

The Swedish international is desperate for playing time and hopes that a move to Ligue 1 will boost his chances of being named in his country's World Cup squad ahead of this summer's finals.

"He didn't want to sell me but I am very happy with my move," the 27-year-old told Sportbladet.

"I want to play, feel that I am a regular and be good as a person."

While he concedes the desire to leave the Premiership high-flyers may strike many as strange, Edman has no regrets and admits that confidence is a vital ingredient of any player's make-up.

"My girl and son are terrific and I am happy here. I understand that people might feel it was a strange decision but for me it feels truly right," he added.

"I don't know if it will increase my chances [at the World Cup] but I want to feel that I have done everything I can.

"A player might have qualities but confidence is important if you are to have success in football."
