Finnan cleared of racist claims
No action will be taken against Steve Finnan after allegations of racist abuse.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that no action will be taken against Liverpool star Steve Finnan after allegations that he racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra. The Reds' right-back was accused by two deaf viewers who claimed they lip-read Finnan using an abusive term towards the French defender.
However after an investigation the former Fulham star, who strongly protested his innocence, has been cleared of any wrong-doing.
The Premiership side welcomed the developments, stating regret that Finnan's reputation had been put on the line.
"Obviously we welcome the news," said a Liverpool spokesman.
"Our own analysis of the television footage proved there was no evidence to back up these claims.
"It's very unfortunate that Steve's good name has been dragged through the mud in the meantime and we are glad this matter has now been resolved."
