Brighton secure Revell signing

Brighton have won the race for prolific non-league striker Alex Revell.

Brighton & Hove Albion have won the race for prolific non-league striker Alex Revell.

The 22-year-old was being tracked by a string of Football League clubs after rattling in 36 goals for Ryman Premier League champions Braintree Town last season.

Boston United had a £20,000 offered accepted by Braintree, while Tranmere Rovers and Brentford, along with Conference club Exeter City, were also interested.

But Brighton have tempted the former Cambridge United youngster to the South Coast on a one-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

Following The Seagulls' relegation from The Championship, manager Mark McGhee was delighted to make Revell his first signing of the summer.

"We've watched Alex since last season and we really liked him," McGhee told the club's official website.

"He's got the potential to be a decent player. It won't be a major signing in the supporters' eyes, but he could turn out to be the best signing.

"He offers something different. He's not the target man - who we're still pursuing - but he's got a freshness about him."
