Sven stands by formation

England head coach Sven Goran Eriksson stood by his new formation against Ecuador.

England head coach Sven Goran Eriksson stood by his decision to change his formation against Ecuador.

The Swedish tactician went for 4-1-4-1 formation against the South Americans in Stuttgart on Sunday, with captain David Beckham securing England's passage to the quarter finals with a 1-0 second round victory.

Eriksson believed his side should have scored more goals against La Tricolor, but was nonetheless pleased to have reached the next stage of the finals.

"I think it works," Eriksson said of his formation to the BBC. "I think we should have scored more goals today, but I'm rather happy that we won.

"We are in the quarter finals again. I hope that we will have another result in the quarter finals than the last time (against Brazil).

"We're in the quarter finals and we haven't performed as well as we can do, but it will come later."

Eriksson acknowledged that match-winner Beckham was physically ill during the second half of Sunday's contest.

"I think he was gone physically and he didn't feel very well, so (Aaron) Lennon came on and did very well," he said.

England centre back John Terry echoed the sentiments of Eriksson, stating his delight at the way they defended.

"I thought we had done really well, actually," Terry said. "We were a little bit slow first half, but we got the goal and we held the lead, so we're pleased with that.

"The second half was very positive. I think the last five to ten minutes, we went in behind too long when we should have kept hold of the ball a little bit more.

"Yet, for 30 to 35 minutes, we kept hold of it well and made them do the running in the heat.

"It's encouraging. We're through to the quarters and we're not firing on all cylinders at the minute.

"It's another win and we're through to the next stage."

Terry praised skipper Beckham for his all-around effort against Ecuador.

"It was not only his goal, but defensively as well in the last five to ten minutes, he was back clearing things," Terry added. "His whole performance was fantastic today.

"Everyone looks at his free kicks and his passing, but the work he does for the team is brilliant and sometimes goes a bit unnoticed."
