Elizondo praises fourth official

Horacio Elizondo has praised fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo's intervention.

Referee Horacio Elizondo has praised fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo's work in the World Cup final.

France infamously finished the contest against Italy with just ten men following Zinedine Zidane's late dismissal.

Many thought Zidane's headbutt on Marco Materazzi in extra time might go unpunished as Elizondo and his linesmen missed the flashpoint.

However, fourth official Cantalejo spotted the incident and was able to provide Elizondo with a clear picture of the events that resulted in Zidane's stunning red card.

"The incident took place a long way from where I was," said the Argentinian official to the Clarin newspaper.

"When I saw Materazzi on the ground, I stopped play and I knew that something serious had happened.

"I asked Garcia if he saw something and he said 'no'. The fourth official was my guardian angel."
