Mainz move for Szabics

Mainz have snapped up Hungary international Imre Szabics from Cologne.

Bundesliga minnows Mainz have snapped up Hungary international Imre Szabics from relegated Cologne in order to strengthen their depleted front line.

The 05ers have already lost Benjamin Auer to Bochum this summer, while Egyptian loan signing Mohamed Zidan has also returned to Werder Bremen.

Coach Jurgen Klopp was desperate to fill the void, and has moved quickly for the highly-rated 23-year-old.

"We have reached agreement with the player and his former club and Imre will put pen-to-paper on the contract on Monday," confirmed managing director Christian Heidel.

Szabics rose to prominence at Stuttgart, where he even proved his class in the UEFA Champions League, but never got going at Cologne during a spell ruined by illness and injuries.
