Anichebe opts for Nigeria

Everton starlet Victor Anichebe has pledged his international future to Nigeria.

Everton starlet Victor Anichebe has pledged his international future to Nigeria.

The 18-year-old was born in the West African country, but moved to England with his family as a baby.

He is eligible to play for both countries, but has decided, after also speaking to Toffees team-mate Joseph Yobo, to pin his colours to Nigeria's mast.

"I would love to represent Nigeria because that is where I'm from," Anichebe told the club's official website.

"My family moved to England when I was just one year old, but I still feel Nigerian.

"I have been a fan from childhood and follow events back home on a regular basis.

"It's nice to get a picture of the international camp from Joseph.

"He paints the picture of a unit who are all proud to wear the family attire and being a part of that group will be great."

Anichebe is looking to boost his international prospects by breaking into the Everton side this season, having made three substitute appearances last term.

Though he has been hampered by a back injury in pre-season, the teenage striker has still impressed and outlined his hopes for the new campaign.

He added: "I'm looking forward to competing for a starting spot at Everton and hitting goals on a regular basis.

"The main thing for me is to keep working hard as I still have a long way to get to the top.

"The fans here are awesome and the management have been supportive, which makes my job extremely easy."
