Albert Luque has relived the moment his car was hit by a passing lorry while he was on his way Newcastle airport. The Spanish winger was on his way to meet up with the rest of the squad for their trip to Germany when he was forced to pull over with a puncture.
Luque stepped out of his car to telephone for assistance and it was one of the best decisions of his life as his car was hit by a lorry shortly afterwards.
He escaped unhurt, although the same could not be said of his car, and he even turned out for Newcastle in the Uefa Cup the following day.
Following his hour-long stint in Frankfurt, Luque opted to reflect on the events of Wednesday morning.
"It was a bad day for me, but I count myself lucky that I was not hurt in the accident," he told the Evening Chronicle.
"I was out of the car at the time talking on my mobile phone and I saw the wagon coming and had to jump out of the way when I saw it was going to crash into my car.
"There was a lot of damage to the car, but it could have been worse for me if I had been sitting in it.
"Glenn Roeder wanted me to play in the game and, because I have not had many chances, I was determined to play.
"I was tired because of the long day on Wednesday and I had missed the training session with the rest of the team, but it was good to be involved."
