Cygan happy at Villarreal

Pascal Cygan has said he is glad to have left Arsenal for Villarreal this summer.

Pascal Cygan has said he is glad to have left Arsenal for Villarreal this summer.

The French defender secured a £2 million move to the Estadio El Madrigal in August and, although injury delayed his Villarreal debut, he has now become a regular member of the back four.

He is enjoying the contrast between English and Spanish football, and is relishing life in La Liga after failing to establish himself at Arsenal.

"Now I am better than in September and I believe I have adapted to the club and the city," he explained.

"English football is different to Spanish, in fact it is impossible to compare.

"Arsenal did not play very physically but the other clubs did and played an aerial game.

"When I was in England I did not get many opportunities because I was the sixth-choice defender and was always on the bench.

"The situation was terrible for me and I wanted to leave and play for a great club like Villarreal."

Villarreal are currently mid-table in La Liga but Cygan is looking for a top four finish.

"This team wants to play in the UEFA Champions League and it will fight for a place," he said.
