Charlton happy for Giggs

Sir Bobby Charlton insists he will be pleased if Ryan Giggs breaks his Man Utd record.

Sir Bobby Charlton insists he will be pleased if Ryan Giggs breaks his Manchester United appearances record.

Giggs moved second with Bill Foulkes on the club's all-time list on Saturday when making his 688th appearance for United in the derby with City.

He is now 71 behind Charlton and has been backed to surpass the United legend's tally of 759 games in the next couple of years.

Charlton sees no reason why the winger would not set a new Old Trafford milestone and says he will be the first to congratulate Giggs.

"I do not feel threatened by Ryan," said Charlton.

"I would be pleased if he did it and I am sure he will. We are only talking about two seasons, so he should do it.

"The better the team plays, the more chances he will have and, when he does, I will be the first person to give him a hug."

The England World Cup winner also put forward the Wales international as a role model for aspiring footballers.

He added: "Ryan is a great lesson to any young player.

"Obviously we played in different eras and we didn't have any substitutes back then, so we didn't get any rest.

"But, nevertheless, you cannot say Ryan is anything other than a marvellous footballer and I am proud he has been associated with Manchester United for so long."
