Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been named 2006 African Footballer of the Year.

Ivory Coast star Drogba took the honour for the first time and denied second-placed Barcelona frontman Samuel Eto'o a fourth successive award.

Drogba captained his country to the final of the African Cup of Nations in Egypt and also spearheaded the team's first ever World Cup finals appearance in Germany last summer.

His club achievements were just as impressive - in May he celebrated helping Chelsea to a second successive Premiership title.

This season he has been in even deadlier form, claiming 28 goals in total.

Drogba's Chelsea team-mate Michael Essien finished third in the voting for the second year running.
