Berbatov fires Spurs past Braga
Tottenham advanced to the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup with victory over Braga.
Tottenham advanced to the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup with a 6-4 aggregate victory over Braga in the last 16 of the competition.Following on from their 3-2 victory in Portugal, Martin Jol's free-scoring Spurs got another three goals at White Hart Lane.
After Tom Huddlestone had beaten Radek Cerny to bring Braga level, two first-half goals from the excellent Dimitar Berbatov had Spurs in command.
Andrade's excellent free-kick gave Braga hope, but Steed Malbranque wrapped up the tie with the home side's third goal 15 minutes from time.
Jol's side will now await their fate in Friday's draw in Glasgow after comfortably seeing off Braga over the two legs.
Spurs had an early penalty appeal turned down when Robbie Keane felt Paulo Jorge handled his shot in his own area, but the hosts were only awarded a corner.
Another contentious decision led to the opener for Braga as Paul Stalteri was adjudged to have fouled Wender and Andrade's driven free-kick was flicked past his own goalkeeper by Huddlestone.
Braga's goal sparked Spurs into life and Keane snatched a shot high over the bar before Berbatov put the hosts back in front in the tie with a goal out of the top drawer.
The Bulgarian striker finished a lovely move with a classy finish after being put in on goal by a delightful through pass from Keane.
Berbatov was denied what looked a certain goal by a great last-gasp save from Paulo Santos, while Malbranque's attempted back-heel did not get past the Braga goalkeeper.
Malbranque saw a drive deflected wide by Andrade, but Spurs and Berbatov got their second before the break with another superb goal.
Huddlestone's long pass was brought down exquisitely by Berbatov and his first-time volley left Santos with no chance of making the save.
Huddlestone was again the provider for the first chance after the break which Pascal Chimbonda headed back across goal and beyond Santos' post.
Braga found a way back into the game through Andrade on the hour mark as he drove a powerful free-kick through Spurs' poorly formed wall and beyond the outstretched arm of Cerny.
An almighty scramble in the Braga six-yard box somehow failed to produce a goal as Spurs again wanted a penalty with Berbatov unable to get a shot away from close range.
Malbranque finally wrapped the tie up with another aesthetical goal, this time, however, Berbatov was the provider, not finisher.
A lovely one-two involving Malbranque and Berbatov saw the Frenchman latch onto the latter's flick and dink the ball beyond Santos for Spurs' third.
