Andrew Johnson has revealed the horror he felt when his Everton team-mate James Vaughan went down injured against Bolton on Monday.Teenage striker Vaughan suffered a severed artery in an accidental clash with Bolton defender Abdoulaye Meite and Johnson was the first player on the scene.
The England international summoned for help immediately and has admitted the injury left him in a state of shock.
"It was the most horrible thing I've ever seen on a football pitch," Johnson told The Sun. "It was frightening all the blood pouring out.
"My first thought was that he must have bone sticking out or something because of the blood."
Vaughan avoided serious injury and Johnson has revealed the 18-year-old wanted to continue playing.
Johnson added: "The amazing thing was James wanted to play on.
"He was adamant he didn't want to come off and was banging the turf in frustration when told he had to.
"We're all gutted for him that he's got injured at a time when he was playing so well and scoring goals."
Johnson feels Vaughan and team-mate Victor Anichebe have bright futures ahead of them.
"Both James and Victor Anichebe are top-quality strikers that have very bright futures in the game," said the 26-year-old.
"I enjoy playing with them. They are top professionals as well as talented footballers and have an awful lot to look forward to in the game."
