Crewe maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign but had to settle for a point after Alex Newby hit back to secure a 1-1 draw for York.
Luke Offord headed the Railwaymen in front from an early set-piece, but Lee Bell's side failed to capitalise on their momentum.
They piled on the pressure in the opening half-hour, with Charlie McNeill testing goalkeeper Alfie McNally.

Josh March wasted a gilt-edged chance when firing over from the six yards after Jack Lankester cut the ball back.
Offord rose highest to plant a downward header home from Calum Agius' corner in the ninth minute.
McNally then blocked an effort from Reece Hutchinson.
But the visitors grew into the game as the first half finished, with Morgan Williams having a bicycle kick blocked and Ollie Pearce firing over.
Pearce was key to a neat passing move which saw Newby released inside the box and the forward tucked his shot into the far corner for the leveller in the 40th minute.
Keeper Tom Booth threw himself across his goal to deny Newby a second at the far post soon after the restart.
He was instrumental in holding off York's advance, pushing away Alex Hunt's shot after the midfielder weaved his way inside the area and keeping out an effort from substitute Zech Medley at the far post in stoppage time.
At the other end Williams came to York's rescue with a goal-line clearance after Lewis Billington blasted an effort towards the top corner.
