Fleetwood Town have sacked manager Graham Alexander a day after they were beaten 5-1 at Gillingham.
The former Scotland international, who made over 1,000 career appearances as a player, had been in charge at Highbury since 2012 and guided them to promotion via the play-offs in 2013/14.
But after failing to win any of their last six matches, a run which includes three straight defeats, the League One side have decided to act and Alexander has lost his job.
"Fleetwood Town Football Club have today parted company with manager Graham Alexander with immediate effect," said a statement on the club's official website.
"The club felt that a change of leadership was necessary at this key stage of the season to enable necessary progression as a football club."
Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley said: "It is an extremely unpleasant part of being chairman having to make such a decision, however ultimately, for a number of reasons; I felt this was in the best interests of the club.
"I would like to place on record my personal thanks for the success Graham brought us with the promotion to League One, his supreme professionalism and for all the hard work he invested over his time here at Fleetwood, and wish him all the best for the future."
