Rangers capture Whittaker

Rangers have signed defender Steven Whittaker from Hibernian for £2million.

Rangers have signed Steven Whittaker from Hibernian for £2million. The versatile defender, who has been linked with a move away from Hibs all summer, has agreed a five-year contract at Ibrox after passing a medical. He becomes Walter Smith's ninth signing of the summer and takes the club's spending during the transfer window past £7million. Whittaker could now make his Rangers debut in their opening Scottish Premier League game against Inverness on Saturday. But he will not be eligible for the second leg of Rangers' UEFA Champions League qualifying round tie against FK Zeta. The 23-year-old, who was called up for international duty when Smith was in charge of Scotland last year, can operate at right-back or in midfield.
