Dave Kitson and Patrice Evra have offered widely differing assessments of the tackle that left the former with a red card, just 37 seconds after coming on as a substitute.
Reading striker Kitson was shown a red card moments after coming on at Old Trafford, in Sunday's 0-0 stalemate, with his lunge on Evra having not sat well with referee Rob Styles.
Kitson has urged Styles to take another look at the incident, claiming there was absolutely no intent on his part.
Innocence claimed
"I can't believe it was a straight red card and I'd implore Rob Styles to have a second look at it," Kitson told
Sky Sports News.
"I know I caught him (Evra) - I was trying so desperately to stop him clearing
the ball up the pitch. Sometimes you are successful and sometimes you miss.
"The last words to me were 'show passion on the pitch, stop them playing and
try to sneak a goal'.
"It's a yellow card - but a straight red...I'm lost for words."
Evra, who was left in a crumpled heap as a result of the challenge, believes that, contrary to Kitson's claim, Styles came to the correct conclusion.
Deserved red
"I went to kick the ball and I just saw his foot coming towards me," recounted Evra.
"I don't understand why he did it. It was very bad. It is the right decision to send him off."
