Monaco v Borussia Dortmund preview: German side battling to overturn 3-2 deficit

Borussia Dortmund face a battle to overturn a 3-2 deficit when they travel to Monaco for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

It takes place a week after the rescheduled first leg, which was delayed 24 hours after several explosions went off near the Dortmund coach and left defender Marc Bartra with a fractured arm.

Kylian Mbappe then scored twice as a struggling Dortmund fell to a defeat, and will now need a big display in Monaco to make the last four. The French side, meanwhile, are hoping for a first trip to to the semi-finals since they got to the final in 2004.

Tiemoue Bakayoko will return from suspension for Monaco, but Fabinho will miss the game after being cautioned in Dortmund.

Benjamin Mendy, who is a reported summer Premier League target, will also come back in for Leonardo Jardim's side after missing the first leg.

Bartra will be out for four weeks as he recovers from his wrist injury, but Marco Reus could start for Dortmund after making his return from injury in the 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Monaco have won four of their last five home games against German opposition (D1), in all competitions. In fact, their only defeat on home soil versus a team from Germany was against Borussia Monchengladbach in the UEFA Cup in October 1996 (0-1).

Charlie's prediction

It was absolutely disgraceful from UEFA that Dortmund had to play the first leg last week. It's not Monaco's fault and I know they're in a title race, but this game should be the first leg.

Once again you've got to back both teams to score as Dortmund will go all out to win this and avenge the injustice they must feel.

All eyes will be on the boy Mbappe again. He is similar to Anthony Martial in terms of his pace, power and movement and is on the edge of being a superstar, although he's not got the finesse of Thierry Henry.

I can see another night of it being close, but I do think with these potential world-class players that they have, Monaco will get the result they need.

Dortmund are 9/4 outsiders to qualify but 5/4 favourites on the night, with Monaco 7/4 to progress with another win and 29/10 to do so with a draw. Jardim's men were cut from 16/1 to 15/2 to win the competition after their first-leg win, while their visitors are out to 22/1.
