Veteran coach steps down after just four games

Guy Roux has quit as Lens boss after just four games in charge of the Ligue 1 outfit. The veteran coach, who spent over 40 years working with Auxerre, confirmed his departure in the wake of Lens' 2-1 defeat at Strasbourg. An emotional Roux, who informed club president Gervais Martel he was planning to step earlier in the week, admitted: "It is without doubt the end of my career. "I went to see the president at the start of the week. I told him that when a player isn't feeling good he goes to see the coach. When the coach feels that way he goes to see the president." Martel plans to name Lens' new coach on Monday but denied speculation linking former Marseille, Bordeaux and Bayern Munich boss Jean-Pierre Papin with the job. "Guy came to see me a few days ago and he explained why he couldn't continue with us," said Martel. "He is someone for whom I have a lot of respect and I believed him when he said he didn't feel capable of carrying on much longer." The 68-year-old Roux has taken charge of 894 matches as a coach in his French league career, 890 of those with Auxerre.
