Rachid Bouaouzan says Wigan were always his first choice, ahead of Premier League rivals Bolton.

Bouaouzan hopes to make debut against Fulham

Rachid Bouaouzan says Wigan Athletic were always his first choice, ahead of Premier League rivals Bolton Wanderers. The winger joined Wigan from Sparta Rotterdam last week, having spurned the chance to sign for another Dutch club. He was also courted by Bolton, but Bouaouzan revealed his priority was to clinch a move to The JJB Stadium. "I knew of Wigan's interest four weeks ago, they came to watch a game and were impressed," Bouaouzan told the Wigan Evening Post. "Bolton were interested too, so were FC Utrecht and Feyenoord in Holland. "I had a medical at Feyenoord, but afterwards I didn't hear anything, so I chose to go elsewhere. "Wigan were my first choice, my agent spoke to Bolton, but I didn't."

Big welcome

Bouaouzan, who hopes to make his debut against Fulham on 15th September, admits the presence of Mario Melchiot and Denny Landzaat was a factor in his decision to join Wigan. He added: "Mario and Denny were very positive about the club, that was a big factor in me signing. "They have the same agent as myself, and when I arrived at the airport to come for talks, they came for me which was a big welcome. "I hope to make my debut in the Fulham game and that's something I will be working hard for in training."
