Defender picks up knee injury against Bremen
Christoph Metzelder has provided Real Madrid with a fresh injury scare after hurting his knee against Werder Bremen.
The German defender, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, lasted the 90 minutes of Real's 2-1 UEFA Champions League win over Bremen on Tuesday.
But Metzelder picked up a knock to his right knee during the match and is rated a serious doubt for the weekend's Primera Liga game with Real Valladolid.
Real doctors will assess the injury over the next 24 hours and are hoping the centre-half has not suffered a major problem.
The Spanish champions' coach Bernd Schuster is already without fellow new signing Pepe, who missed the Bremen game due to a thigh injury.
Meanwhile, Metzelder was happy to see Real start the Champions League group phase with a victory over Bremen.
He told reporters after the match: "We have played a good match and I believe that it is very important to begin the Champions League group with three points."
