Former Saints man leaves national team
LDU Quita striker Agustin Delgado has announced his retirement from the Ecuador national side. The former Southampton man, 32, has decided to quit the side due to a recurring back injury.
"I sent a letter to the officials of the FA in which I announced my decision to no longer play for the national team," he told the South American press.
"I am very thankful to all the people who have trusted in me, but now is the moment to say goodbye because it's too much effort for me to be as fit as the national team deserves, as I still keep having problems with my back.
"There was a point when I thought I could play again for Ecuador, but to be honest it's just too hard for me to prepare as well as a player needs to at international level.
"I want to thank all the people who have trusted in me during my career, like Dusan Drascovic, Hernan Gomez, Paulo Massa, Carlos Sevilla, Luis Suarez, Juan Carlos Oblitas and Edgardo Bauza.
"In addition, I wish luck to the new generation who will wear the Ecuador shirt."
