Wales succumb to two first-half goals

England's Under 16 side moved top of the Sky Sports Victory Shield table with a 2-0 win over Wales at Telford. First-half goals from the impressive captain Jonjo Shelvey and lively striker Jose Baxter secured Kenny Swain's side the points. Under 21 coach Stuart Pearce was in attendance and he will doubtless have been taken by the performances of Shelvey and Baxter. The latter named dragged an early shot wide before Shelvey forced a low save out of Rhys Wilson with a precise shot. Shane Williams struck a volley just over for Wales before Wilson was again called into action by Shelvey's thumping drive from 25 yards. Wilson's slip inside his own box provided a glimmer of an opening for Baxter, but the youngster's shot bounced back off the outside of the post. England took the lead on 33 minutes when Shelvey curled a sublime free-kick over the wall and in off the crossbar. And within five minutes the second goal arrived when Baxter converted a penalty after he had been brought down by Lee McArdle. Liam Head forced a smart save out of Wilson at the near post in a second half which lacked the chances of the first.
