FA WSL: Manchester City go top after defeating Arsenal
Monday 28 March 2016 17:50, UK
Manchester City Women claimed a 2-0 victory over 10-woman Arsenal Ladies to maintain their 100 per cent start in the Women's Super League.
Scotland international Jane Ross (65) opened the scoring with her first goal for City, with Toni Duggan (78) sealing the win from the penalty spot.
Arsenal had to play the majority of the match with only 10 women after Jemma Rose was shown a red card in the 13th minute for bringing down Ross.
The victory lifts City up to top spot in the embryonic WSL table.
Arsenal midfielder Fara Williams came close to opening the scoring with an early free-kick that crashed against the bar before Rose received her marching orders for bringing down Ross.
City forward Duggan went close just before half-time, but her low shot cannoned back off the post.
After the interval, Arsenal goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal produced a fine save to deny Nikita Parris as City went in search of the game's opening goal.
City eventually broke the deadlock when Rose met Duggan's cross from the right and powered her header beyond Van Veenendaal.
Kosovare Asllani came close to doubling City's lead moments later, but Van Veenendaal produced a stunning save to deny her.
However, City made sure of the points when Duggan netted from the penalty spot after Parris had been tripped in the 18-yard box by Dominique Janssen.
Elsewhere, Liverpool Ladies' trip to Chelsea was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
