Striker off to Molineux after contract clause triggered

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is on his way to Wolves in a £1.5million switch from Plymouth Argyle after the Midlands based club triggered a clause in the striker's contract. On joining the Pilgrims from Manchester United in 2006, Ebanks-Blake stipulated that he must be allowed to talk to any club making a bid of £1.5million or more. Now after scoring 22 goals in 74 games for the club, including 13 in 23 this season, he is set to join a Wolves side who are the joint lowest scoring side in the division. Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock is understandably disappointed to lose the Championship's third highest scorer, but admits that there was nothing the club could do to prevent him leaving.

Best contract

"We did not want Sylvan to leave, and we would have offered him the best contract that has ever been offered to a Plymouth Argyle player to try and persuade him to stay," he told the club's official website. "However, he was so determined to join Wolves that he would not even discuss a new deal with us. For me, that is disappointing." Plymouth have made a tidy profit on a player who cost them just £300,000 two years ago, but Sturrock believes that without the clause in the contract they could have got a lot more for the striker.
Bargain
"When Sylvan joined us, he and his agent were insistent that the £1.5million trigger price was written into the deal," he said. "If we hadn't agreed, he wouldn't have signed, it's as simple as that. "When Wolves indicated they were prepared to meet that price, we were bound to allow Sylvan to talk to them and we could not ask Wolves for a bigger fee. "I believe that Wolves have got a bargain. Sylvan is already one of the top goalscorers in the Championship, and there is more to his game than just goals. "He is still a young man and has everything in front of him."
