New signing not keen to be battling relegation

Andy Reid wants to challenge for European football with Sunderland, rather than be involved in a 'relegation dogfight' every season. The Irish midfielder joined Sunderland from Charlton before the close of the transfer window and made his debut as a substitute in Saturday's 2-0 win over Wigan. The fourth successive home win in the league lifted the Black Cats up to 14th in the table and four points clear of the bottom three. Survival is Sunderland's sole target this season, but Reid has no plans to be embroiled in similar scraps on Wearside in the long term. "No disrespect to Charlton because I loved every second I was there, but the biggest difference is the size of the club," Reid told reporters.

Big club

"Just look outside. There were 43,600 people who had come to see us play against Wigan. "I haven't come here to be in a relegation dogfight every year. I've come here to kick on. "There are clubs who are in mid-table and pushing for European spots who quite simply are nowhere near as big as this club. "The size of the club doesn't count too much, you've got to get out on the pitch and do it. You only have to look at Nottingham Forest, one of my old clubs, to see that. "When you look at the set-up here, the training ground, the supporters, everything is geared to challenging for European places and that's what I want to do. I'll not be content with fighting relegation."
