Vukcevic nets in either half for Portuguese side

Simon Vukcevic scored in each half as Sporting Lisbon beat Basel 2-0 in the first leg of their last 32 Uefa Cup tie. The Portuguese side made home advantage count as Sporting seek consolation for going out of the UEFA Champions League at the group phase. Vukcevic gave Sporting the ideal platform with the opening goal on eight minutes when he finished clinically from Leandro Romagnoli's cross. The second goal arrived just before the hour mark when Joao Moutinho flung in a cross for Vukcevic to guide home. Basel threatend occasionally, but the Swiss side failed to seriously test Rui Patricio in the Sporting goal. With a two-goal cushion, Sporting will be confident of setting up a last 16 meeting with either Bolton Wanderers or Atletico Madrid.
