Sven Goran Eriksson is still surprised that he was able to bring Benjani Mwaruwari to Manchester City.
Benjani's move to City from Portsmouth was eventually ratified after the close of the transfer window, with Eriksson having not expected to get the chance to sign the striker.
The Zimbabwean marked his debut with the decisive goal in the derby against Manchester United earlier this month and Eriksson remains delighted to have clinched the deal.
Eriksson said: "Of course I knew about him. You know if you work in the Premier League, if you follow top scorers.
Perfect player
"But to be honest, it was very late. I couldn't dream that he was available.
"Suddenly, I got a phone call 24 hours before it closed. Of course we took him because I thought that was what we needed, the perfect player for us.
"He is big, strong, scoring goals, with pace, good technique. It was a surprise for me, but I am very happy he is here."
The City boss also praised the way that Benjani has quickly settled in at the club and believes he is a player the team 'needed'.
Eriksson added: "It looks like he has been here for years. He was fantastic in training yesterday.
"I don't know how many goals he scored - I asked him and he didn't know. He is very good. I think he is a player we needed."
