Graeme Souness and Thierry Henry urge Arsenal to spend big this summer in order to keep up with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United

Both Thierry Henry and Graeme Souness think Arsenal need to strengthen this summer to compete for the title next season.

The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday against Manchester United and despite a strong second half to the season Arsene Wenger’s men have at least 13 points to make up on Chelsea looking ahead to the start of the next campaign.

Henry and Souness believe Arsenal must be active in the transfer window this summer otherwise they will fall further behind the top clubs.

Henry said: “You know Chelsea are going to do it [strengthen the squad], you know Manchester City are going to do it. We’ve been through that a lot. Arsenal need to do it.”

Arsenal - who are currently third, five points behind Manchester City with a game in hand - have had the spine of their team questioned this season by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson but Souness thinks Wenger must assess every part of his squad as we approach what’s likely to be a very busy summer transfer window.

He said: “Forget spine, forget any names. If you’re a big football club and you’re not strengthening, you’re standing still as all the other big teams will be strengthening. That’s a dangerous game.

“Arsenal’s group of players have certainly got better from the first part of the season until now. Can they add two or three better players in some positions? Certainly. If you asked 100 Arsenal supporters, then the answer would be unequivocal, it would be yes.”
