Stockport boss lauds young striker

Jim Gannon hailed the performance of Liam Dickinson in Stockport's 1-0 win against Wycombe. The young striker grabbed the only goal of the game at Edgeley Park to see the Hatters book a Wembley date with Rochdale in the League Two play-off final. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the deadliest forwards in the lower leagues, a remarkable achievement considering he was playing non-league football with Woodley Sports until 2005. Gannon feels that Dickinson has the potential to perform at a higher level in the future, and was left in awe after seeing his prized asset grab a sublime individual effort to hand Stockport a 2-1 aggregate victory.

"He showed the power, pace and skill that you don't see at this level," he said. "He's a fantastic athlete, a fantastic footballer and I'm delighted for him because I knew he could be our hero today." County are relishing a derby date with neighbours Rochdale on 26th May and Gannon is looking forward to a crunch contest between two teams who try to play the game in the right manner. "I'm looking forward to next weekend," he added. "It should be a great game between two sides who both play football."
