Sunderland defender to undergo Britannia Stadium medical

Sky Sports News understands Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham is on the verge of returning to Stoke. Higginbotham is reported to be travelling to the Britannia Stadium on Monday evening to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms after Sunderland accepted a bid in the region of £2.5million. Stoke are thought to be keen for the 29-year-old, who plays in the centre of defence for Sunderland, to fill a role at left-back and are hoping to push the deal through ahead of the transfer deadline. Higginbotham spent the 2006/07 season with the Potters and captained the club following the departure of Michael Duberry to Reading. The former Manchester United player joined Sunderland in 2007 after signing a four-year deal and has made 21 appearances for the Black Cats.
