Barry Fuller says he is honoured to have become Gillingham's new captain after just nine months at the club.
Fuller, who joined the Gills in January from Blue Square Premier outfit Stevenage Borough, replaced Andrew Crofts as skipper on Tuesday in time for his side's Johnstone's Paint trophy defeat to Colchester.
Despite this stuttering start to his tenure, the 24-year-old defender is adamant that he is the right choice and can lead the club back into League One.
His comments come as the Gills sit in ninth place in the league and prepare to take on Morecambe at the KRBS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.

Fuller told
skysports.com: "I am hugely honoured to have been given the captain's armband. It is even more special because I am a local lad.
"I won't be introducing any new techniques, I am just going to make sure all of the lads are happy during games and before and after training.
"It is my job to keep their heads up, encourage them and tell them what they are good at to get the best out of them.
"So far this season we haven't had the start that we would have wanted or expected but I am confident that we can turn that around and secure automatic promotion.
Kick-start
"We need to start with a win this weekend and hopefully that will kick-start more victories so we can get straight back up."
Fuller admitted he was surprised to be handed his new role by manager Mark Stimson this week.
He said: "I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It wasn't what I was expecting at all when I was called into the manager's office.
"I never thought of myself as captain material but obviously I have the right attributes for this job and I can't wait to start it properly in the league."
