Portugal's record goalscorer calls time on his illustrious career

Former Paris St Germain striker Pauleta has decided to call it a day and announce his retirement from football at the age of 35. The Portuguese striker is PSG' all-time leading goalscorer with a total of 109 and has been without a club since May 2008 when his contract expired. Pauleta has been spending his time developing a coaching school for youngsters in his native Azores, a Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean. The 35-year-old admitted in a French newspaper that he has had several offers to play around the world including Europe, the Gulf and the United States but declared that he was not interested. He told Le Parisien: "I think that within a month I could get back to an acceptable level of fitness, but it's no longer what I want to do." The striker was top goalscorer in France in 2002 for Bordeaux and 2006 and 2007 for Paris St Germain. The striker also holds the record for his country after hitting 47 goals in 88 games for Portugal. Pauleta represented his country at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and 2000 and 2004 European Championship Finals.
