Mourinho's side progress despite slip up

Inter Milan are through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, despite being upset 1-0 by Panathinaikos on home soil. Josu Sarriegi bagged the only goal of the game at Giuseppe Meazza on 69 minutes, but despite defeat, Inter have progressed as they still top Group B and the Greeks and Anorthosis Famagusta play each other in the group's final match. Despite a cagey start by Inter they nearly forged ahead with their first real chance of the game. Esteban Cambiasso's through ball picked out Adriano, but the Brazilian's left-footed drive struck Mario Galinovic's right-hand upright. Pana seemed happy to counter-attack and ex-Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva should have done better from outside the penalty after seeing his effort dragged well wide of target. Cambiasso was again provider for Inter's next best chance when Zlatan Ibrahimovic's deft finish drifted just over from the Argentinian midfielder's clever lofted through-ball. Inter finished the half in the ascendancy, but Luis Figo blasted wide after being teed up by Adriano and just a few moments later the veteran Portuguese winger fed the Brazilian only for the striker to fail to test Galinovic.

Front foot

Inter remained on the front foot after half-time, but Maicon's well-struck after a surging run was never troubling Galinovic despite taking a slight touch from Gilberto Silva. Out of the blue Inter found themselves chasing the game on 69 minutes when Panathinaikos stunned the majority of the Giuseppe Meazza faithful by breaking the deadlock. Ioannis Goumas had a free header in Inter's penalty area and while keeper Julio Cesar did well to keep out the goal-bound effort the rebound fell kindly for Sarriegi who stabbed home gratefully. Inter turned up the pressure after falling behind and they came close to equalising at the death through substitute Julio Cruz, but Galinovic superbly turned away the striker's looping header.
