Ajax drop points at home while Feyenoord squander early lead

Ajax missed the chance to go second in the Eredivisie while Sparta Rotterdam stunned high-flying NAC. Ajax missed the chance to move up to second and within a point of leaders AZ Alkmaar after a 1-1 draw at home to Utrecht. It could have been worse for Marco van Basten's men had striker Miralem Sulejmani not equalised Sander Keller's 35-minute opener for the visitors. Ajax stay third while Utrecht also stay where they started the day in 10th place. Feyenoord stretched their unbeaten run in the league to five games after they drew 1-1 away at struggling Vitesse Arnhem. Roy Makaay thought he had snatched all three points for the visitors after his third minute strike but a late equaliser from Paul Verhaegh ensured Vitesse a share of the points. The result means Feyenoord jump one place into 11th while Vitesse stay in 14th just three points off the bottom. Improving Sparta Rotterdam caused one of the upsets of the weekend as they battered title-chasing NAC Breda 4-0. A win would have seen NAC move back on level terms with AZ at the top, but it was not to be as they were put to the sword. The home side were three-up at half-time courtesy of goals from Arne Slot and Rydell Poepon's brace. Kevin Strootman added a fourth in the second half to put the icing on the cake of a fine home triumph. Bottom side Volendam beat Roda JC last time out, but their hopes of unlikely back-to-back wins were dashed after being crushed 6-1 by NEC Nijmegen. The home side were out of sight with 16 minutes on the clock thanks to goals by Lasse Schone, Roman Zomer and Jhon Van Beukering. Volendam's defence failed to tighten up before half-time with Said Ntivazonkisa adding a fourth before Van Beukering bagged his second of the game. Schone scored his second of the contest just after the hour mark although the visitors did restore a little pride when Gerson Sheotahul netted a consolation.
