With Liverpool and Chelsea having safely negotiated their passage to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Wednesday's action turns to Arsenal and Manchester United's bids to top their respective groups. Rio Ferdinand has this week stated his belief that it would be no disaster should United fail to progress from Group E as winners, but Sir Alex Ferguson has always held the opinion that to finish anything less than top is failure. Likewise, Arsene Wenger will be drumming into his charges that a win in Portugal against Porto - like Arsenal already qualified - would hand them a second leg at home going into the competition's knockout phase. United host Aalborg at Old Trafford likely to rest a number of their stars, with a tough trip to in-form Spurs peeping over the weekend horizon. Carlos Tevez will likely be handed another opportunity to show his manager why he is worth a starting berth that has alluded him since Dimitar Berbatov's signing. Although if his four-goal salvo against Blackburn did not convince Ferguson, then he may be wondering just what will. In order to qualify as group winners United need to match Villarreal's result at Celtic, who are playing for pride alone at Parkhead having already been presented with this term's European wooden spoon. Arsenal will kick-off proceedings at Porto's impressive Estadio do Dragao top of the pile and providing they can avoid defeat against Jesualdo Ferreira's side, who they beat 4-0 at Emirates Stadium, then it will be a position they will retain. Fenerbahce's trip to Ukraine to face Dynamo Kiev concludes Group G's action.

European heavyweights

Following their Uefa Cup exploits last season Zenit St Petersburg were regarded as potential dark horses to progress from a tough Group H, but the old adage of class coming to the fore has proved correct - with European heavyweights Juventus and Real Madrid having already extinguished the hopes of their featherweight rival. Again, it is the battle for top spot that provides the night's most intriguing plotline, with Juve needing just a point in Turin against basement dwellers BATE Borisov to stay at the head of the pile, as Real host Zenit in Juande Ramos' first game at the helm following his quick fire appointment on Tuesday. Continuing the theme is Lyon's clash with Bayern Munich at Stade de Gerland in Group F. The French and German champions have dominated throughout the campaign against a disappointing Fiorentina and a poor Steaua Bucharest side. Lyon's superior goals scored means Bayern will have to win or claim a score draw in France if they are to claim top billing and on paper, if nothing else, an easier draw for the next round. Fiorentina head to Romania needing to avoid defeat in order to secure a Uefa Cup berth.
